NJ WINE GROWERS ANNOUNCE AWARD WINNING WINES FOR 2008
HAMILTON SQUARE, NJ—The Garden State Wine Growers Association today announced the winners of its annual wine competition for wines made in New Jersey, the fifth largest producer of wine in the nation.
The Winery of the Year Award went to Alba Vineyards of Finesville, New Jersey which received a gold rating for three of its wines, silver for five and bronze for five more. It was the most gold and silver ratings received by any one winery in the competition. The wines are rated by wine industry experts using the 20-point University of California/ Davis system using clarity, color, bouquet, acidity, sweetness, body, flavor, bitterness, astringency and overall quality as criteria. The judging was led by Dr. Gary Pavlis, PhD of Rutgers University, a wine and small fruit expert who has been supervising the judging for 18 years.
Other top winners in the annual competition include:
- Tomasello Winery in Hammonton wins the Governor's Cup and the award for Best Dessert Wine with its 2007 Vidal Ice Wine
- Alba Vineyard wins the Governor's Cup for Fruit Wine and the award for Best Fruit Wine with its Apple Ice Wine
- Heritage Vineyards of Richwood wins the Governor's Cup for Grape Wine with its 2005 Chambourcin
- 4JG's Orchards and Vineyards of Colts Neck wins the awards for Best Hybrid Wine and Best Estate Wine with its 2004 Chambourcin
- Plagido's Winery of Hammonton wins the award for Best American Wine with its Antonio Rosso Fredonia
- Coda Rossa of Franklinville wins the award for Best Vinifera with its 2006 Super Tuscan

FIVE WINERIES TO PARTICIPATE AT 44TH ANNUAL RUTGERS GARDENS OPEN HOUSE FESTIVAL AND WINE TASTING SATURDAY, JULY 26
NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ--The Rutgers Gardens of Rutgers University will present its 44th Annual Open House Festival and Wine tasting from 9:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. The Open House will feature lively and informative tours of the Rutgers Gardens and The Donald B. Lacey Display Garden and the opportunity to sample the wines of five New Jersey wineries.
The wineries, Auburn Road Vineyards and Chestnut Run Farms, both of Pilesgrove, Bellview Winery of Landisville, Heritage Winery of Richwood and Plagidos Winery of Hammonton, will host the wine tasting and sales from 11 am until 3 pm. in the Sun and Shade Garden. Admission for the tasting is $5 at the gate and includes the opportunity to try more than 50 wines grown in vineyards in New Jersey.
Persons attending the festival will have the opportunity to visit The Donald B. Lacey Garden and its wide array of spectacular plantings of annuals, tropicals and perennial flowers as well as herbs and vegetables, grown and tended by volunteer gardeners. The theme for this year's open house is “Color My World”. The Gardens features “All American,” award-winning plant selections and many new and unusual varieties of annuals, tropicals, vegetables and herbs.
This year's festival will also include a Garden Market featuring local produce vendors and artisans as well as garden seminars including “Ponds 101” presented by Grounds Keeper, Inc., “Root Invigoration” by Bartlet Tree Experts, “Composting” by the Monmouth County Master Gardeners and the popular “Ask the Expert” Clinic.

ARIA FANS TO ENJOY SOUNDS OF THE OPERA DINNER CONCERT FRIDAY, JULY 25 AT RENAULT WINERY
EGG HARBOR CITY, NJ--The Milza family of Renault Winery and the Tuscany Singers will join together to present a “Sounds of the Opera” dinner concert Friday, July 25, featuring cocktails, a four-course dinner and great opera.
The cocktail reception kicks off at 6:30 PM, followed by dinner featuring grilled filet mignon and egg-battered chicken breast with a duo of Renault wine sauces, summer squash, and garlic whipped potatoes followed by the concert. “Sounds of the Opera Concert” including cocktails and dinner is $69 per person, plus tax and gratuity. STATE'S LARGEST FIREWORKS DISPLAY, LIVE ENTERTAINMENT TO DRAW SEVERAL THOUSAND TO ALBA VINEYARDS SUMMERFEST
FINESVILLE, NJ—Several thousand people are expected to fill one of the state's largest vineyards Saturday, July 19 for Summerfest, an evening of live entertainment and fireworks orchestrated by the same family company that has coordinated pyrotechnic displays for the Washington DC July Fourth Celebration, Macy's New York July Fourth Celebration on the Hudson and the Statue of Liberty Bicentennial Celebration.
Sponsored by PNC Bank, the 11 th annual Summerfest begins at 4 p.m. at Alba Vineyards in Finesville at the border of Hunterdon and Warren Counties, only two miles from the Delaware River.
This “lawn chair and blanket” festival features something for the entire family including fireworks by Garden State Fireworks – three-time world champion pyrotechnic artists, food vendors, children's activities, crafts and live music. Cairo, the rhythm band, is back by popular demand and will begin playing at 5:00 p.m.
Admission is $15.00 for adults, $10.00 for children six to 12, and free for children five and under. Parking is free. Alba's award-winning wines will be available for purchase. While festival goers are welcome to bring a picnic basket, food will also be available for purchase.
